Because We Can Keep Going...Long After We Think We Can't

Seriously?! It’s DAY 2! DAY 2 and I was already taunted, tempted and almost conquered by the cookie dough. Let me paint you a picture…
There I was, walking into Fresh n’ Easy to get 2 things: pine nuts and….and…and…shit, I already forgot what else. I’m so consumed with the cookie dough, I can’t even concentrate.

Going back… I walk in, past the baskets because I was just getting a couple of things. I walk past the lettuce, past the spinach and, past the super-cute and deliciously prepared meals. Walking along, chatting on the phone. Well, since I was on the phone I must have walked around the store 7 times because I can’t concentrate on both things at once (that and I couldn’t find the damn pine nuts).

7th time around the store and by this time I had in my hands: pesto, egg whites (which look like a runny nose by the way), and popcorn seeds and no pine nuts. Even though I know they’re not down the refrigerated aisle, I go down there anyway. Mmm, lunch meat? Nah, don’t need it. Ground turkey? No, not right now. OH MY GOSH!!!! COOKIE DOUGH! I walk closer to the cookie dough to get a better look. They’re perfectly shaped into oversized cylindrical mounds of deliciousness and not just 1 flavor. They were peanut butter, chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, sugar and I wanted them all.

I was literally salivating in front of the sweets. So fresh, so easy, so beautiful. I was having visions of putting a blob into the microwave for a few seconds until it was still doughy, but a tiny bit cooked. At the same time I was having the following thoughts: You can’t be serious? It’s Day 2 and you’re not allowed to fuck it up on Day 2. Come on self-control, kick in. Ok, if self-control isn’t there at least I know that I have to blog about this if I do it. How weak will I look. Dear Blog Followers, I’m weak and I binged on cookie dough on January 2nd. Awesome.

So, who won you ask? KATIE WON BITCHES!! That’s right. I withstood temptation, got the things I needed and went home to make some stuffed salmon. YES! 2 days down…the rest of my life to go. Ahh, God help me!

As a get-me-motivated-jump-start to my new lifestyle, I re-picked up one of my favorite books, Skinny Bitch. It was so refreshing to be reminded of all of the important things in the book. It's a straight-shooting, no nonsense guide to living the healthiest lifestyle possible...and since I'm a straight-shooting, no nonsense (trying to live healthily (is that a word)) kind of gal, this seems perfect.

It's message in a nutshell, "If you want to be the skinny bitches that you're so jealous of, stop eating shit and move your body." It's a message that I am 100% on board with.* (Do I look like a real author when I use the asterisk?)

Here are some of the very best things I have taken from it, that I try and remember:
1. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Duh. This isn't rocket science. If I want to lose weight, I need some green (or orange or red) in my life. Besides, the more good stuff I put in there, the less hungry I am for the bad stuff.

2. Aspertine is the devil. I HIGHLY reccommend the chapter on this. There are so many document adverse effects of aspertine (migranes, skitopherenia, cancer, just to name a few of the non-scary ones). No Diet Coke! This is one of my hardest ones. I love it. I want it. On a tough day, I feel like I need it, but I don't. I don't. It's poison. I don't, I don't, I don't.

3. Dairy is unnecessary. Here's a little common sense for you. Look at every other species in the world. What do they do when they are born? Drink their mother's milk. Then, ween off of it. Then, eat and drink other things...NOT another animals milk. So, why do we drink cow's milk? It's a myth that it creates strong bones and there is no medical evidence leading to that fact. There IS eviece that shows: milk cause excessive mucus. Just try this if you have a cold...one day have a lot of dairy in your diet. The next, none. Which day did you feel better. 1/3 of the population is lactose intolerant. Hmmm, interesting.

4. Processed food sucks. "Diet" processed food sucks even more. We should be shopping the perimeter of the grocery story, not in the aisles. Well, maybe the spice aisle, I love that aisle.

5. Refined sugar is bad for you and highly addictive. I have the worse sweet tooth in the world. It might be the hardest thing in the world for me to slow down, but I am committed.

*Now, granted this is written by 2 vegans and while I'm not willing to go no animal products just yet, I certainly agree with their points.

Thanks for visiting! I'll be blogging about my journey to the healthiest version of me this year! 2011 is my year! I have all of the tools necessary to get my body, mind, and spirit into ship shape, so off we go!

Here are the changes I'll be making this year:

Changes, not resolutions for the obivious cliche.

1. I will write AND MAIL at least 20 cards to people this year. I will not end the year with a stack of cards that have been written, stamped, NOT addressed, NOT mailed! haven't I have some of the most kind-hearted, wonderful people in my life and it's time to give back and make them smile. Who doesn't love getting mail that's not bills?!

2. I will take pictures of anything and everything I'm eating and send them to my friend. I know it sounds crazy but I think it will help hold me accountable. I'm not so good at the point counting/logging but I am good at having my phone with me at all times (I know my friends are thinking, "Hmmm, you do have your phone with you? Well why don't you ever answer it? I know. I know. You already know I screen and don't like talking on the phone. However, if you happen to call me while I'm driving, I'd LOVE to chat it up...but I digress). So, I figure that if I am forced to take a picture of exactly what/when I'm eating, I'll feel more accountable!

3. I will pay off my credit cards! I am on a debt diet! You would think that my parents taught me to live on credit. I don't know how all of my mother's lessons (that she learned from Oprah) and making me divide up my allowance into jars starting at age 12 (50% into spending, 20% long-term savings, 20% short-term savings, 10% to a charity) have escaped me. I REALLY don't know how my father's ten million conversations on how stupid it was to use a credit card and not pay it off every single month have escaped me either. Thus, my goal is to become more like my father with the money matters.

4. I will write a new, positive message to myself, every evening, on my mirror (Are 3 commas too many when not making a list...I'm a run-on sentence a-holic). Then, I will read it every morning.

5. I will write my goal for each day on my white board at work. Then, throughout the day, my students will help hold me accountable. Gotta love 6th graders for their honesty! As they look though pictures of old classes, "Ms. Cartier, wow, you used to be a lot skinnier!" "Hmmm, thank you for stating the obvious." Little guy in my class replies, "Don't worry, you can get there again. We can help you!" Again, gotta love 6th graders for their honesty!

6. I will go back to Zumba! Why did I stop?!?!? I love being there. I love the way I feel after I'm done. Again, why did I stop?!

7. I will blog about the road to The Healthiest Version of Me. The question is...blog where? Blog here? Blog on another site?

So, there you have it! 7 New Year's Changes!
