Tons, and when I say tons, I mean the twelve people I talk to pretty often, tell me, "I would love to start a blog but..."
So, I'm here to dole out some advice as if I'm the be all, end of of blogging. Imagine that Katie.
But...
1. I don't know what to write about
I'm not expert on blog writing but I'm not sure that you have to have something to write about every time. Look at one of America's favorite shows, Friends. It was about nothing. Six people sitting around and talking and everyone loved it.
My blog...about nothing.
My most well received blogs are either:
A. About some very, very small incident
B. Intense blogs that I put in the Draft box for at least a week before I post
I don't know what to write about either. I feel like the least likely person ever to blog. No family. No wedding I'm planning. I mean, what the !@#$ do I write about but somehow I have posted almost 250 blogs...and there are another 85 in the Draft box.
2. I'm not that funny. I won't be able to make people laugh.
So, don't be funny.
Be you.
Nobody will visit your blog to read anyone but you.
You're smart?
Be smart.
You're sentimental?
Be sentimental.
Be real. Be you.
3. I'm scared.
Yeah, I hear you on this one. It's very hard to "put yourself out there" for the whole world to see. It feels like you're standing naked in front everyone. Sometimes I forget that people that are not just me have read some of my posts and then they say things to me in real life and I have to remind myself that I mad the choice to write that and post it so, of course, it's fair game to talk about. However, know that this is a Catch 22 because it's probably my favorite thing ever when people mention my blog to me.
Katie! You're so narcissistic.
I know it. You know it. It's cool.
It's ok, be scared...but write anyway.
4. I don't have a good title.
Me either. I had no idea what to call my blog years ago but I just decided on "Journey to the Healthiest Version of Me," and kinda like a child, you can't just change her name when she's five years old.
So, choose something you can live with, something you kinda like and start.
5. What if nobody reads it?
They might not.
I would love more readers but you know who I write for?
Me.
I write things that I need to write and then want and need to read again.
If you are trying to write "for" other people your blog will suck. Write for you. I write because I love to write. I love when I have so many thoughts in my head that the kids are clicking so fast they sound like they're going to break. I love to cut and paste and make it sound right. I love to find pictures that work.
So, although I LOVE that people read it, that's not why I write.
Write for you.
6. I am a ___________________ (insert important job here) and I can't put that much of myself out there.
I'm a pretty big deal too and I'm actually kinda serious when I write that. I was terrified to start writing because I have hundreds of former students and their parents who could find and then read my blog. Eh, what are you gonna do?
I will tell you that this is the reason my blog isn't even MORE raw than it is now. I can't be out there writing about EVERYTHING but I can write a lot and it can still be me. You can too.
The moral of this story is:
Start your blog...and then share it with me because I want to read it!
